When the doors of the Hennepin Healthcare Clinic & Specialty Center open on March 26, 2018, patients will find their familiar caregivers in an inviting, convenient new building located on the campus in downtown Minneapolis. What they won’t find are multiple entrances, long skyways, and three block walks from the parking ramp their clinic. The new Clinic & Specialty Center has eliminated complicated wayfinding and created a seamless, patient-friendly experience – beginning with something simple as parking.

“Parking and convenient access are fundamental needs, which can be hard to accommodate downtown,” said Jon L. Pryor, MD, MBA, CEO. “So we built two levels of parking below the building with elevators that bring patients directly to the floor of their appointment. No more long walks from parking ramps and bus stops to get to our clinics.”     Continue reading “State-of-the-art Clinic & Specialty Center to open in late March in downtown Minneapolis”

Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) is offering $99 lung cancer screening for people who may be concerned that they are at risk for the disease. “We know that by the time lung cancer causes symptoms like cough and chest pain, it’s usually advanced and has spread to other organs,” explains radiologist Dr. Gopal Punjabi. “For years, there has been tremendous interest in catching lung cancer early, so this test is a very important development.” If you’re between the ages of 55 and 79 and you smoked for more than 30 years, or you quit less than 15 years ago, you may be eligible for this low-cost, low-dose CT scan. Avoiding unnecessary radiation: low-dose X-rays, CT scans at HCMC

Doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) now have a new diagnostic tool that gives them the information they need – without the extra radiation patients don’t need. It’s part of a new approach to medical imaging based on Philips CT (cat scan) and X-ray systems, which includes techniques, programs and practices to ensure the best image quality while reducing radiation exposure to patients and the hospital’s clinical staff.

Chip Truwit, MD

“Everyone’s concerned about radiation exposure, and the goal of X-ray and CT scanning is to obtain a clear image so we’re able to make an accurate diagnosis,” explains Dr. Chip Truwit, Chief of Radiology at HCMC. “More radiation used to mean clearer image – but not with this new technology. We’re now able to customize the radiation to the patient and deliver only what’s needed to get a clear image. This often results in being able to reduce the patients’ exposure by one-half or even down to one-tenth of what we’d normally use.” Continue reading “Avoiding unnecessary radiation: low-dose X-rays, CT scans at HCMC”
