Hennepin Healthcare offers access across an integrated system of care

A 130-year-old Minnesota healthcare system is now known as Hennepin Healthcare. The new name was introduced to promote greater understanding of the connected services offered across the system and how consumers can access care.

“We provide a breadth of quality healthcare services in our clinics and hospital, along with medical education, research, and innovation that touches almost every person in every corner of the state, but our identity as a single hospital limited consumers’ understanding of all that we offer,” said CEO Jon L. Pryor, MD, MBA.

Hennepin Healthcare is the new identity for the integrated system that includes the hospital, HCMC; a new 377,000 square foot Clinic & Specialty Center opening in downtown Minneapolis later in March; multiple clinics and pharmacies in Minneapolis and suburban neighborhoods; MVNA home care; Hospice of the Twin Cities; the Advantage and Horizon care networks; Upstream Health Innovation; Hennepin Health Foundation; Hennepin EMS, and the Minnesota Poison Control System.

HCMC is still the name of the nationally recognized medical center best known for Level l adult and pediatric trauma care, leading-edge treatment and research of traumatic brain injuries, critical burns, stroke and numerous other medical and surgical specialties, along with behavioral health expertise and its renowned medical education program.

In recent years, the system has added new services and offerings including a health innovation center, business-to-business direct contracting, home health, a hospice, and more entities that will benefit from being unified under a broader system identity.

The introduction of the new system identity comes as a new Clinic & Specialty Center is about to open on the downtown campus. When it opens on March 26, 2018, the 377,000 square foot state-of-the-art center will improve access to the system by offering primary and specialty care, same day surgery and procedures, specialty dental care, and a comprehensive cancer center in one convenient location.

Along with the new building, a new website – hennepinhealthcare.org – and an updated logo have been introduced.

Over the past 130 years, the name of the hospital changed as the ownership and services offered to the community changed. It opened in 1887 as City Hospital, became Minneapolis General Hospital in 1920, Hennepin County General Hospital in 1964, and Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in 1974. In 2007, the legal name changed to Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc., which remains the legal name.
