Dr. Sheila Riggs elected to Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. board

RiggsSheila 5-10-13Sheila Riggs, DDS, DMSc, Director, Office of Community Engagement for HealthClinical Translational Science Institute and Chair, Department of Primary Dental Care at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry has been elected to the Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. (HHS) board of directors. 

Hennepin Healthcare System is a subsidiary corporation of Hennepin County that operates Hennepin County Medical Center. Twelve citizens with extensive experience in health care, business management, community development, finance, public health and workforce development serve on the volunteer board.

Dr. Riggs has experience as a leader in dental education, workforce development, and business from the University of Minnesota, and as former CEO, President and Director of Delta Dental of Minnesota.

“We are fortunate to have Dr. Riggs add her extensive knowledge and expertise to our board as we guide this essential community healthcare system,” said Sharon Sayles Belton, chair of the Hennepin Healthcare System board of directors. “In addition to her business and academic leadership, Dr. Riggs has served in national, state and local healthcare policy leadership positions and we will benefit from her perspective and breadth of experience.”

Dr. Riggs received her dental degree (DDS) from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and her doctorate of medical sciences (DMSc) in epidemiology from Harvard University.

Locally she is active with the Twin Cities Greater United Way, the Women’s Health Leadership Trust, and the Minnesota Women’s Economic Roundtable, as well as other organizations. Dr. Riggs also is frequently asked to speak to audiences of young women about opportunities in the fields of science and math.
