HCMC named one of “America’s Best Hospitals”

Hennepin County Medical Center named one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for 15th consecutive year

U.S. News Media & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Hospitals rankings include Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) as a top hospital in diabetes and endocrinology care again this year, and names six other specialties at HCMC as high performing. The rankings are published annually published by U.S. News and World Report and are available online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals.

Out of nearly 5,000 hospitals evaluated across the nation, only 140 hospitals performed well enough to rank in a particular specialty. HCMC ranked 43rd in diabetes and endocrinology. Additional high performing specialties named at HCMC are Ear, Nose & Throat, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology.

“We are especially proud of our record of 15 consecutive years with a nationally ranked specialty,” said Tim Harlin, HCMC Chief Operating Officer. “That consistent high quality is the direct result of the outstanding work of our physicians, nurses, and all of the health care professionals and support staff who are dedicated to providing patient-centered care at our hospital and in our clinics.”

According to U.S. News, the core mission of the Best Hospitals rankings is to help guide patients who need an especially high level of care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. The regional “high performing” lists give patients and their families more options of hospitals within their community and in their health insurance network.  The data used to formulate the rankings includes death rates, patient safety, procedure volume, and other objective data. Responses to a national survey, in which physicians were asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases, also were factored in.

Hennepin County Medical Center is a nationally recognized Level I Adult Trauma Center and Level I Pediatric Trauma Center with primary care and specialty clinics located in downtown Minneapolis, five primary care clinics in Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Richfield and South Minneapolis, and retail clinics in Bloomington and Eden Prairie. The medical center and clinics offer a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient services, including Hennepin Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, and Hennepin Kidney Transplant Center. The hospital was home to the first kidney transplant center in the Upper Midwest and has been recognized as one of the top three transplant programs in the nation by the University Health Consortium.
