Hennepin Healthcare System to integrate with MVNA
Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. (HHS), the public subsidiary corporation that operates Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), and MVNA have signed an agreement to integrate their operations, effective Jan. 1, 2015.
MVNA is a provider of specialized services including home healthcare, community palliative care, family health services and other specialty home-based and community health services. Through its subsidiary, Hospice of the Twin Cities (HOTC), MVNA provides hospice services as well. Last year, MVNA and HOTC provided more than 80,000 visits to almost 19,000 clients.
“This is a perfect fit that allows two organizations with a shared mission to continue to provide outstanding care to our community,” said Sharon Sayles Belton, HHS board chair. “HCMC is a leader in hospital care with a growing clinic network and MVNA provides care to patients in their homes and in the community so now we’ll be able to provide a full range of care more seamlessly and efficiently with our patients and their families.”
MVNA was founded in 1902 as Visiting Nurse Committee of the Associated Charities of Minneapolis. It has grown to include adult health, community health, and family health services as well as hospice care.
“We have been providing ‘population health’ since the beginning,” said Rebecca Enos, RN, MVNA board chair. “In recent years it has become clear that we will serve our patients best if we are connected to the rest of the healthcare system so that services can be delivered without interruption. HCMC is the perfect partner for us and for our patients.”
MVNA is HCMC’s most referred-to provider of home care and hospice. In addition to the acute care hospital and clinics in downtown Minneapolis, HCMC operates eight clinics in Minneapolis neighborhoods and suburban communities. An independent review and additional analysis concluded that integration with MVNA would enable HCMC to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes and enable growth into new markets.
“This is about improving patient satisfaction by providing care to patients where they want to be cared for,” said Jon L. Pryor, MD, MBA, CEO of Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. “We can also improve quality by reducing admissions and avoidable readmissions and we can lower costs by keeping patients out of, or minimizing length of stay in, the acute care setting.”
Integration of the two organizations positions HHS to be more competitive in the emerging market for total cost of care contracts.
The HHS board, MVNA board, and Hennepin County board approved the integration agreement. Integration of the two 501 (c) 3 charitable nonprofit organizations does not involve a financial payment to MVNA. The Hennepin Health Foundation will receive and manage a $7 million endowment provided by MVNA. On January 1, 2015, MVNA will become a subsidiary corporation of the HHS to be fully integrated into the operations of HCMC in 2016.
