HCMC welcomes three additional orthopaedic surgeons

Drs. Gudrun Mirick, Jackie Geissler, and Nancy Luger

Three new faculty members recently joined the Orthopaedic Department at Hennepin County Medical Center. In addition to general trauma, the Fellowship-trained surgeons offer expertise in the care of sports injuries, hand and upper extremity injuries, and fracture care.

Dr. Nancy Luger completed her residency at the University of Minnesota and recently returned to Minnesota after completing a Sports Medicine Fellowship in South Lake Tahoe, CA. She specializes in sports medicine with a specific interest in shoulder and knee injuries for both the pediatric and the adult population. Because HCMC’s Orthopaedic Department shares her commitment to resident teaching and education, Dr. Luger looks forward to this component of her practice.

Dr. Jackie Geissler also completed her residency at the University of Minnesota. She completed the USC/Boyes Hand Fellowship, spending time at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles County Hospital, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She has a special interest in upper extremity fracture care, arthritis, reconstructive surgery, elbow trauma, and peripheral nerve injury. She looks forward to providing patient-centered comprehensive orthopaedic care and promoting excellence in surgical training.

Specializing exclusively in fracture care, Dr. Gudrun Mirick is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon who completed her residency at the George Washington University in Washington, DC and an Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship at San Francisco General Hospital. Her interests are centered on pelvis and acetabular fractures, the use of external fixation for immediate fracture stabilization, and foot and ankle reconstruction. She will also be coordinating the pediatric fracture program. Dr. Mirick’s research interests include biomechanics and computer-guided imaging for internal fixation of the pelvis and acetabulum.

These three practitioners join a nationally recognized team of orthopaedic specialists, led by Dr. Richard Kyle, Chief of Orthopaedics, who practice at one of Minnesota’s busiest Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Centers.

“It’s exciting to have Dr. Luger, Dr. Geissler and Dr. Mirick on board,” said Dr. Kyle. “Their commitment to excellence and outstanding skills fit perfectly with the high standards we expect of our services, and it’s what we require for the care of our patients.”

The centerpiece of Hennepin County’s clinical health services, Hennepin County Medical Center offers a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient orthopaedic services, where ongoing, nationally recognized orthopaedic research is conducted at the Excelen Center for Bone and Joint Research and Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation.
